How does AI bird recognition work?
-
Please note that only the AI version of a product has the built-in AI bird recognition function. If you have purchased the Lite version, you will need to subscribe to the Bird Detection service on Birdfy Cloud to use this function.
-
When the camera detects a bird, it captures a video and some photos and sends them to our classification module for species recognition.
-
If the module is confident enough (more than 30%) about the bird species, it will inform you through the app. If not (less than 30%), it will tell you that it detected a bird but could not identify its species.
Sometimes, you might notice that your camera does not recognize any birds or gives wrong identification results. This could happen for several reasons:
-
Angle matters: different angles of the same bird could show different features of its species. Some photos might not even contain a clear view of the bird’s head or body, which makes it harder for the module to recognize it.
-
The frequency of certain bird species matters: some bird species are more common and reported more often by our Birdfy users than others, so we have more data for them in our module. Therefore, when the module is unsure about a bird species, it might show one of the most common ones, such as Northern Cardinal or Blue Jay.
